What is a Special Rigger?

To become a special rigger in New York City, a contractor must have a minimum of one year of experience in the hoisting and rigging business, have completed an extensive training course, pass an exam, and maintain recertification requirements. With a special rigger license, the contractor is authorized to hoist items not exceeding 2,000 pounds on the outside of any building with a hoisting machine, as well as to install and use a suspended scaffold. Prior to erecting a suspended scaffold, the contractor must file a CD5 suspended scaffold application, which can only be submitted by a licensed special or master rigger. Without a special rigger license, it is illegal to hoist materials on the outside of a building in New York City.

In New York City, special riggers are essential for the safety of the public and the construction industry. They are responsible for installing, maintaining, and disassembling structures and equipment. They specialize in complex rigging and lifting operations and provide stability and support to structures during construction and demolition projects. Without special riggers, the risk of injury and property damage would be significantly higher.

Special riggers make sure that construction and demolition projects are completed safely. They are responsible for the safe transport and positioning of heavy equipment, including cranes, hoists, and other materials and components.

Special riggers inspect and test equipment prior to use to ensure that it is safe and in compliance with safety regulations. Special riggers also provide safety to the public by ensuring that structures are properly secured. They are responsible for installing safety nets, guardrails, and other safety devices that ensure the safety of workers and passersby.
